Happy Sunday and Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! 💐

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and I want to touch on something that’s not mentioned enough: The "news blues" — that drained, heavy feeling after too many grim headlines — isn't just a vibe. It's a real mental health phenomenon, and the numbers are striking:

  • 74% of Americans are anxious about current events—a record high.

  • Just 14 minutes of negative news consumption raises symptoms of anxiety and depression.

  • Negative news activates the same fight-or-flight response as a physical threat — and most of us are triggering it multiple times a day.

The good news? Research shows consuming positive, solutions-focused content reduces anxiety and depression, lowers stress hormones, boosts optimism, and even improves heart health. Good news isn't a guilty pleasure. It's medicine. And that is exactly why we're here every Sunday.

Now, let’s get to the good stuff! 💛

🧠 A Tiny Implant Offers a Jolt of Hope for Depression

Imagine being so deep in depression that antidepressants don't even scratch the surface. You've tried everything your doctor can offer and nothing works. For the millions of Americans living with treatment-resistant major depressive disorder, that's not a hypothetical — it's a Tuesday. Now there may be a new answer, and it’s roughly the size of a blueberry.

Houston-based startup Motif Neurotech just received FDA approval to begin the first-ever human clinical trial of its DOT implant — a tiny, wireless brain stimulator designed specifically for people whose depression hasn't responded to medication or therapy.

The science is simple: depression, in part, involves certain brain regions going dim — underactive and underperforming, like a phone stuck at 2% battery. The implant sits in the skull bone — not the brain tissue itself — and delivers gentle electrical pulses to wake those quiet regions back up. Think of it as a pacemaker for your mood. The procedure takes about 20 minutes and is performed outpatient. Oh, and the device is entirely battery-free — patients briefly wear a special baseball cap to power it up.

The trial will enroll about 10 patients at eight leading institutions across the country. Although it’s still early, it's a mind-blowing step forward for treatment-resistant care. And with May being Mental Health Awareness Month, the timing feels exactly right. 🔗Read more

🐶 A Beagle Breakthrough: 1500 Dogs Get a Second Chance at Life

After years at Ridglan Farms — a dog breeding and research facility in Blue Mounds, Wisconsin — 1,500 beagles are on their way to new homes, warm laps, and the kind of life every dog deserves. Two animal welfare organizations, Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy, negotiated a deal to purchase all 1,500 dogs from the facility, which has also agreed to surrender its breeding license by July 1.

The first 300 dogs were transported out last week, and more are leaving every day. At a staging area in Wisconsin, each beagle is being vaccinated, microchipped, spayed or neutered, and — in many cases — experiencing human kindness for the first time. The reaction? Instant. "They started within an hour or so coming up to us, wanting attention. Some crawled into people's laps,” said Lauree Simmons, president of Big Dog Ranch Rescue. “Every single one of them are super sweet. I just know they know they're safe."

Over 700 adoption applications have already poured in. The dogs are being sent to rescue partners across the country to be placed in loving forever homes, with the younger dogs expected to adjust quickly and the older ones taking a little more time.

Beagles are famously chosen for research because of their gentle, trusting nature. It's that same sweetness that makes this rescue feel extra joyful. They gave us their trust. Now it’s our turn to make sure their only research work from here on out is finding the best spot on the sofa. 🔗Read more | Watch the video

Clean Energy Hits Historic Milestone

Here's a jolt of news that would have sounded like wishful thinking just 10 years ago: renewable energy is now officially the world's largest source of electricity, pulling the plug on coal’s streak for the first time in over 100 years.

Why does it matter? Because coal and fossil fuels don't just warm the planet — they're the leading cause of global air pollution, linked to millions of premature deaths and a long list of health problems from asthma to heart disease. The more we tap into clean sources, the cleaner the air we breathe, the more stable our climate, and the lower our energy costs become.

According to a major new report analyzing data from 215 countries, renewables generated 33.8% of the world's electricity in 2025, nudging past coal's 33% for the first time since around 1919. Solar led the charge, with its biggest year ever, meeting 75% of all new global electricity demand growth by itself. Together, solar and wind covered 99% of new demand — meaning fossil fuel use fell, not because of a crisis, but because clean energy simply outgrew it.

Even China and India — two of the world's largest energy users — reduced fossil fuel generation in the same year for the first time in decades. And here at home, renewables outshined natural gas to become America's #1 source of electricity in March — also a historic first. Experts say that milestone reflects years of steady investment finally reshaping the U.S. grid.

There's still a long road ahead. But as one analyst put it: "The momentum is no longer just an ambition. It is becoming a structural reality." 🔗Read more
