If you ever need proof that a city can have its cake — or rather, its Danish pastry — and eat it too, look no further than Copenhagen, Denmark.

The Economist Intelligence Unit just released its 2026 Global Liveability Index, ranking 173 cities on everything from healthcare and safety to whether your morning commute will make you lose your mind. For the second straight year, Copenhagen claimed the #1 spot on the planet, pulling off perfect 100-point scores in stability, education, and infrastructure. Vienna, Austria and Melbourne, Australia rounded out the top three, proving once again that bikeable, scenic capitals are doing something very right.

So what makes Copenhagen so special? It’s the effortless day-to-day magic: world-class transit, near-flawless healthcare, and an urban design that prioritizes human happiness. As EIU industry director Ana Nicholls put it, the city's edge comes down to "consistency across the board rather than a single standout strength." It is peak Danish culture — being ridiculously good at life without making a fuss about it.

And if you're wondering how the U.S. stacks up, New York City logged one of the biggest score jumps on the entire global map this year, leaping up the charts thanks to sharp drops in crime rates.

For millions of people managing high cholesterol, doing everything right — eating clean, exercising, and taking a daily statin — still isn't always enough to get their numbers into the safe zone.

Until now, the next level of defense was a class of heavy-hitting drugs called PCSK9 inhibitors. They work like a magic eraser for your arteries, blocking a specific protein so your liver can sweep away harmful LDL cholesterol. The catch? Last week, the FDA officially approved Lipfendra (aka enlicitide), the very first daily pill that delivers the exact same powerful results as those injectable treatments. In clinical trials, adding Lipfendra to standard statin therapy slashed bad cholesterol levels by an astounding 56% to 59% in just six months. Even better? Its manufacturer, Merck, expects the pill to hit pharmacies within weeks at a much lower cost than the injectable alternatives.

If you've ever used Canva to design a graphic or presentation, you know the platform was built on taking something unnecessarily complicated and making it remarkably easy. Now, its billionaire founders — husband-and-wife duo Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obrecht — are applying that exact same logic to ending extreme poverty.

Since 2021, the tech power couple has channeled $150 million through their Canva Foundation to provide direct, unconditional cash transfers to families living in poverty across Malawi. Partnering with nonprofit GiveDirectly, the initiative — the largest program of its kind ever run in a low-income country — sends funds straight to residents' mobile phones with zero red tape, zero bureaucratic hurdles, and zero strings attached. Recipients receive about $550, a meaningful chunk of a family's annual income in Malawi, and they get to decide exactly how to spend it — fixing a roof, buying livestock, paying school fees, or starting a small business.

The results are the kind that make skeptics do a double take. In one pilot area, a staggering 90% of recipients climbed above the extreme poverty line in just three months. Child mortality dropped 48%. Illness fell 27%. School enrollment jumped 23%. Economists even found that every $1,000 handed out generated about $2,400 in local economic activity.
