Talk about a peak achievement! On August 31, 91-year-old Dale Sanders officially reclaimed his title as the oldest person to hike the entire 2,193-mile Appalachian Trail when he reached the summit of Mount Katahdin in Maine — capping off an incredible journey that began last September in West Virginia.

The Tennessee resident—affectionately known by his trail name, “Grey Beard”— first claimed the record as the oldest thru-hiker at age 82 in 2017. When a friend snatched the title four years later at 83, Sanders knew he had to lace up his boots once more.

Walking in sections with well-earned breaks along the way, he conquered rough terrain, unpredictable weather, and 71 falls — including six hard tumbles, a brief hospital stay and a final stumble just 200 yards from the finish line. Yet, his determination never wavered.

Along the way, Sanders became a trail celebrity, cheered on by fellow hikers and treated to caramel frappes by thoughtful volunteers known as “trail angels”. Upon reaching the famous summit sign, Sanders paused to offer a prayer of gratitude before celebrating with his support crew.
