🎓 Genius 13-Year-Old Who Overcame Adversity Headed to NYU Grad School
Most 13-year-olds are still figuring out their locker combos. Joe Petraro-Hyppolite is figuring out grad school.
The Long Island teen scored a 1590 on the SAT at age 10 and graduated high school at 11. Today he's finishing his bachelor's degree at Louisiana State University, and next fall he's headed to New York University for a master's in sports management. His IQ is 168, which lands squarely in genius territory. At 13, he'll be less than half the age of his classmates, and will likely finish his master’s degree around the time he's old enough to drive.
But what makes Joe’s story even more remarkable is that the road wasn't always smooth. As a small boy, Joe was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome, dyslexia and was placed in special education classes. He also survived leukemia and endured severe bullying over his Tourette's, his illness, and his intelligence.
Joe has turned all of it into something good. He advocates for greater understanding of Tourette's, and he founded Joe's Be Kind Campaign, which includes an Adopt a Grandparent program, inclusive sports opportunities, and an effort that has helped build more than 127 wells in Africa. His mom says everything he does now feels "surreal."
What's next after NYU? Maybe a career in paleontology. Sounds like this extraordinary kid is about to dig up something big. 🔗 Read more | Watch the video
👯♀️ Twin Sisters Conjoined at the Head Successfully Separated in 25-Hour Surgery
Since birth, Hiyab and Wuhbto could hear each other's voices but had never seen each other's faces.
The twin sisters were born in Ethiopia joined at the tops of their heads, facing opposite directions. It's an extremely rare condition that happens in only about 1 in 2.5 million births. In March 2025, the girls traveled to St. Louis, where a team of nearly 30 specialists at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital spent about a year preparing for one of the most complex operations in pediatric medicine.
The big day finally came in February. Following a grueling 25-hour operation where surgeons carefully untangled shared blood vessels, hospital officials recently shared an update on their incredible progress — and it was well worth the wait.
The girls, now 2, are seeing each other face to face for the first time. They're looking into each other's eyes during daily rehab, flashing big smiles, and hitting major developmental milestones. Wuhbto recently completed a successful skull reconstruction, with Hiyab scheduled for hers later this fall as the pair gear up for a bright future back home.
It's a huge win for the sisters and a shining example of what medical teamwork can do. Talk about getting a head start on life! 🔗Read more | Watch the video
🦌 Colorado’s Giant Wildlife Bridge Saving Human & Animal Lives
Why did the elk cross the road? Because Colorado finally built it a bridge.
Nine months after opening, the I-25 Greenland Wildlife Overpass outside of Denver is already paying off in a big way. Not only is it the largest wildlife bridge in North America, spanning 200 feet over 6 lanes of highway, but it's part of a system that includes 5 wildlife underpasses and fencing to steer animals to safe crossings. The result? A 91% drop in wildlife-vehicle collisions along that stretch.
For years, the interstate was like a giant wall for local wildlife. One biologist said animals basically had to play a real-life game of Frogger just to get across. Now elk, pronghorn, mule deer, black bears, and even mountain lions can stroll over traffic without a single honk. Cameras have even caught pronghorn crossing to the west side of the highway for the first time in decades.
It's good news for drivers too. Fewer collisions mean fewer injuries, less car damage, and fewer traffic jams. And although Colorado's bridge isn't the first of its kind, it's part of a growing trend. It's one of 19 projects funded through a federal grant program for wildlife crossings, with similar projects in states like Arizona and Montana.
Turns out the best way to keep animals and drivers safe is to give everyone their own lane. 🔗Read more
