When 66-year-old Tim Andrews faced end-stage kidney disease, the outlook was bleak. Tied to dialysis, chances were slim he’d survive the long wait for a human organ. So surgeons at Mass General Brigham offered a revolutionary alternative: an organ from a Yucatan miniature pig, named Wilma.

Scientists used advanced CRISPR technology to make 69 precise genetic edits to the organ — knocking out pig viruses and tweaking proteins to fend off human immune rejection. The result? A staggering 271 dialysis-free days, shattering the previous record of just two months for a living human with a gene-edited animal organ.

The transplant took Tim from "dead tired" to vacuuming, walking his dog and throwing out the first pitch at a Boston Red Sox game. When the organ eventually began to fail after nine months, it wasn't a defeat — Wilma had successfully served as a temporary "bridge," keeping Tim alive and healthy until a permanent human kidney became available.

With over 90,000 Americans currently on the kidney waitlist, this landmark success proves animal-to-human transplantation can buy critical time for end-stage patients. Researchers are now gearing up for full clinical trials, bringing medicine closer to a future where donor shortages are a thing of the past.
