🚀 First Black Woman Commander Leads Crew to Space Station in Record Time

Houston, we have a history-maker! NASA astronaut Jessica Watkins just became the first Black woman to lead a crew to orbit, commanding SpaceX's Crew-13 mission to the International Space Station. And she did it in under 8 hours — less time than a transatlantic flight — setting a record for the fastest American trip to the station ever.

Jessica is no stranger to the ride. A geologist who once worked with NASA's Curiosity Mars rover team, she's now on her second trip to the station, following a 170-day stay in 2022. Joining her are NASA pilot Luke Delaney, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Joshua Kutryk and cosmonaut Sergey Teteryatnikov — all first-time fliers.

Now the real work begins. The crew will spend about 6 months aboard, running experiments on everything from heart disease and Parkinson's treatments to crop growth, plus tech demos that support future moon and Mars missions.

The crew also has a little extra luck on board. Their "Lucky 13" mission patch honors Apollo 13, the 1970 moon mission that survived a near-disaster and returned its astronauts safely home. "We really wanted to honor their legacy, honor their resilience and their grit," Jessica said.

Talk about reaching for the stars, and getting there fast. 🔗Read more

🩻 New 60-Minute Body Scan Comes to the U.S. to Help Spot Health Issues Early

You take your car in for a tune-up before the engine light comes on. Now your body can get one, too, thanks to a new preventive scan that puts you in the driver’s seat of your own health.

Neko Health, a Swedish company started by Spotify co-founder Daniel Ek, just opened its first U.S. clinic in New York City. The idea is simple: spot trouble early, before you feel anything wrong. For $499, you get a series of non-invasive tests, including a full body scan that checks your heart, skin, blood, circulation and metabolic health, plus body composition, like body fat. The scan uses advanced computer vision sensors with no radiation along with comprehensive bloodwork to provide the lab numbers. Afterward, you sit down with a medical professional who immediately walks you through the results and gives you a personalized action plan — all in a one-stop, 60 minute appointment.

What it doesn’t do is organ imaging like a CT scan or MRI, and it isn’t covered by insurance — although you can pay with a health savings or flexible spending account. Still, proponents say it packs yearly labs, scans and more into a single hour for a fraction of the price many Americans already pay for out-of-pocket insurance costs, concierge medicine or high-end competitor scans like Prenuvo or Ezra.

And plenty of people are already lining up. More than 350,000 globally have joined the waitlist, including 25,000 in NYC alone who signed up before the doors even opened. More New York clinics are planned, with Miami, Washington, D.C. and San Francisco to follow next.

Consider it a service call for the one machine you can't trade in. 🔗Read more | Watch the video

🎓 Two U.S. Colleges Get Historic Billion-Dollar Windfalls

Forget an apple for the teacher. This week, two billionaires gave colleges the whole orchard.

First up: Ken Griffin, founder of the investment firm Citadel, is giving Carnegie Mellon University $3 billion, which the school says is the largest single gift ever to a U.S. university. Most of it — $2 billion — will build a brand-new campus in Miami for about 3,500 students. Instead of traditional majors, it will tackle big real-world challenges like human health, energy and advanced manufacturing. The rest stays in Pittsburgh, split between the computer science program and other campus projects.

A week earlier, Nike co-founder Phil Knight and his wife, Penny, committed $1 billion to Knight's alma mater, the University of Oregon, to launch a brand-new College of Engineering. Until now, Oregon students lacked a traditional engineering school, leaving students to look elsewhere for undergraduate degrees. Soon, they can major in it on campus, which is a big deal in a state expecting about 2,500 engineering job openings every year.

For Phil, who started Nike with his old track coach, it's about giving the next dreamer a shot. As he put it: "To make an audacious dream a reality requires more than a vivid imagination. It also requires the sort of opportunity that our great American universities, both public and private, have historically provided. This is no time to abandon them."
