Happy Sunday!

I'll be honest — putting this week's issue together got me a little emotional. Two stories in particular had me reaching for the tissues: Savannah Guthrie's quiet show of strength after an unimaginable couple of months, and the Artemis crew who named a moon crater after their commander’s late wife. I won't say more — you'll want to discover those stories yourself.

The rest of the issue is pretty great too.

Let's dive in! 💛

📰 GOOD NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

🛝 Recess is Back — And This Time It’s For the 70+ Crowd

Remember the pure joy of the playground as a kid — the swings, the climbing, the absolute refusal to go home when your mom called your name for the fourth time? Well, cancel your afternoon nap and grab your sneakers, because recess is no longer just for the juice-box set!

A growing movement across the U.S. has seniors swapping slippers for swings. Places like Great Age Fitness Park in Houston are popping up in communities nationwide, and let’s be clear: this isn't your grandma’s chair yoga. We’re talking air walkers, spinning discs, and illuminated reflex buttons that would make a 30-year-old break a sweat. It’s low-impact, high-intensity fun designed to boost balance, sharpen coordination and keep joints from acting their age.

The science is just as sturdy as the equipment. With about 30% of adults over 70 facing mobility challenges, the National Institute on Aging warns that "slowing down" is the real enemy. These playgrounds tackle that head-on, but the real "secret sauce" isn't the workout—it’s the "raucous laughter" and camaraderie. Seniors are showing up for the balance beam but staying for the banter, proving that being around people who "just get it" is the ultimate energy boost.

As the park’s founder puts it: "The moment you start to slow down, everything changes." These playgrounds are making sure that the only thing "retiring" is the old idea of what 70 looks like. 🔗 Read more | Watch the video

🎗 A Simple Swab Could Transform Endometrial Cancer Diagnosis

Here's a number that should make every female sit up: roughly 1 in 32 women will be diagnosed with endometrial cancer by age 80 — and by 2050, that number could climb to 1 in 17. It's the most common gynecological cancer in the U.S., it's rising, and until now, diagnosing it meant potentially invasive, painful, and anxiety-inducing procedures that most women dread.

A San Francisco startup called PinkDx may be about to change all of that — with a simple swab.

Rather than relying on transvaginal ultrasounds or tissue biopsies, PinkDx's new test involves a quick, painless vaginal swab taken right in a doctor's office. The sample gets shipped to a lab in California, where machine learning analyzes the genetic material and delivers results within two weeks — no uterine sampling required.

The findings, published in the International Journal of Gynecological Cancer, have shown the test to be nearly 99% accurate, challenging a long-held assumption in medicine that you have to sample the uterus to understand what's happening inside it.

Clinical validation trials are now underway at 12 major medical centers including Mayo Clinic and Columbia University, and if all goes well, the swab could be available across the U.S. as soon as mid-2027. It’s a major step toward a future where getting checked no longer requires a deep breath and a high pain tolerance.🔗 Read more

From Pacific Garbage to Plastic Pavement: Hawaii’s Roads Are Getting a Trashy Upgrade

What do you do with an island drowning in plastic waste and abandoned fishing nets? If you’re Hawaii, you stop looking for a place to dump the trash and find a way to drive on it.

Researchers at Hawaii Pacific University are proving that yesterday’s yogurt containers, water bottles and old nets make for a surprisingly flexible and durable road surface. By melting this plastic into the asphalt mix, they’ve created a surface that may actually be tougher than the standard stuff, including withstanding the impacts from heavy trucks and Hawaii’s tropical climate. So far, they’ve pulled over 90 metric tons of debris from the Pacific, and a full ton of nets have already been integrated into public infrastructure. It’s a literal garbage glow-up!

Of course, the big question was: would these "plastic roads" shed tiny microplastics back into the ecosystem? After a year of testing on Oahu, the news so far is good. It turns out the road surface is staying put—in fact, your car’s tires actually shed more microplastics than the pavement does.

In the end, this project shows that Hawaii isn't just cleaning up its act; it is taking recycling to a whole new level and paving the way for a better future.🔗 Read more
