📰 GOOD NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
🧠 New Drug Trial Shows Promise for Treating Parkinson’s
Parkinson’s research is shifting away from just treating symptoms and moving toward early prevention. A new small trial from Australia and the UK shows how researchers are targeting the very first warning signs of the disease in people with isolated REM sleep behavior disorder — a condition where individuals physically act out their dreams. It’s often a major red flag, as about 7 in 10 people with the disorder are later diagnosed with Parkinson’s.
Of the 41 trial volunteers, 30 took an experimental pill called SNT-4728 for 12 weeks, while 11 took a placebo. At the end of the trial, the pill group showed a significant reduction in brain inflammation and an improvement in movement scores with no major side effects, while the placebo group got worse.
So why are researchers so excited? Currently, no treatment can pause or reverse Parkinson’s — meaning treating high-risk patients early could change everything. "By targeting Parkinson’s symptoms before they appear, we can potentially slow, or even stop, the condition in its tracks," said Dr. Lynsey Bilsland of Parkinson’s UK.
Larger trials are up next, but proving we can protect the brain before a formal diagnosis is a big leap forward — and that’s something worth cheering. 🔗Read more | Watch the video
🏃♂ Teen Finishes Chicago Marathon 11 Months After Paralyzing Injury
Less than a year ago, Wyatt Anderson couldn’t move below his neck. On Sunday, he ran 26.2 miles through the streets of Chicago.
The 17-year-old suffered a spinal cord injury playing basketball last November. Then came spinal fusion surgery, months of rehab, and a whole lot of grit. Along the way, his physical therapist told him about a man who finished 50 marathons in 50 states from a wheelchair. That story lit a spark, and Wyatt set an ambitious goal of his own: running a full marathon within a year — even though he was barely able to get out of bed on his own.
Goal, meet finish line. Wyatt crossed the line at the Chicago Marathon in 3 hours, 56 minutes, and 28 seconds, with his brother Jack right beside him. That works out to about nine minutes a mile — a pace plenty of seasoned runners would happily sign up for. Together, the brothers also raised money for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation to support others living with paralysis.
His advice for anyone staring down a mountain of their own? “Just take it day by day. You can do it.” Wyatt took it day by day, and those days added up to 26.2 miles. Now that’s a comeback with serious mileage! 🔗Read more | Watch the video
🏠 Apple Makes Its First Leap into the Smart Home
The company that already lives in our pockets, on our wrists and in our ears is now heading for the front door. This week, Apple made its first big leap into the smart home by collaborating with LG and Schneider Electric on the Apple Home Collection, which includes smart cameras, a video doorbell, a door lock, and thermostats. It’s a whole new product category for the tech giant.
So what’s in it for you? The lock senses your iPhone or Apple Watch as you walk up and opens automatically, so you can finally stop fumbling for your keys with groceries in each hand. The doorbell’s extra downward-facing camera spots packages on the ground, while the outdoor camera can tell faces, pets, and deliveries apart, which means Fido gets treated like family.
Then there’s the HomeView, a smart display that acts as the command center. Ask it, “What recipe did Mom send me yesterday?” and Siri gets cooking. Plus, it uses facial recognition to know who’s standing in front of it, so your nosy roommate won’t be able to snoop at your personal messages.
Privacy and simplicity are also big selling points. Apple says everything in the Home app is end-to-end encrypted so not even Apple, LG or Schneider can peek, and setup is as easy as AirPods — just hold your iPhone close and follow the prompts.
Siri, it’s official: you’re moving in! 🔗Read more | Watch the video
